Scaling and Root Planing

Gum Disease

Scaling and root planing is one of the most effective, non-surgical treatment options for periodontitis, also known as gum disease. Periodontitis is marked by the infection and inflammation of the supporting soft tissues around the teeth. In advanced cases, these symptoms can spread to teeth and the jawbone, causing severe oral problems, including tooth loss.

Gum disease forms when toxins present in plaque begin irritating the tissue of the gums, resulting in inflammation. This infection continues to develop, eventually occupying the space located between the teeth and gums. This causes the gums to pull away from the teeth, leading to gaps called periodontal pockets. These gaps are extremely prone to becoming infested with tartar, bacteria and plaque. If left untreated, gum disease can destroy the jawbone and connective tissue.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing consists of a deep cleanse that is designed to remove heavily built-up plaque, tartar and toxins from above and below the gum line. The treatment is designed to focus on one single quadrant of the mouth at a time. After the harmful build-ups have been removed, rough spots located on the surfaces of the roots of the teeth are smoothed out to prevent future build-ups.

Overall, the procedure is highly-effective in controlling gum disease and preventing tooth loss. The process also enables the periodontal pockets to retract, allowing the gums to recover and reattach to the teeth.

As one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults, gum disease is a very serious issue that should be promptly treated. If you or a loved one is experiencing any signs or symptoms of a gum infection, please contact our office at (770) 824-8916 to schedule an appointment.
